The NBA and its players' association are close to agreeing on a new collective bargaining agreement that would institute a new 19-year-old age limit, reduce contract lengths and raise the salary cap, sources close to both negotiating committees said Monday night.

The potential agreement would run for six years and would allow the two sides to avoid a July 1 lockout.

The two negotiating committees were scheduled to meet again on Tuesday morning in New York, NBA spokesperson Tim Frank said. Union spokesperson Dan Wasserman declined comment on the story.

A source close to the NBA negotiating committee and a source close to the union's negotiation committee claim that all of the major issues between the sides have been agreed to in principle, and the purpose of Tuesday's meeting is to work out some of the finer points of the agreement that weren't addressed during a lengthy, breakthrough negotiation session Friday. Both sources asserted that none of the issues left on the table are major sticking points.

If those issues can be worked out in a timely fashion, the two sides would be ready to announce a deal.

If a new agreement is reached soon, the players would have the opportunity to ratify it during a summer meeting on June 28. It might take several more weeks for the final agreement to get drafted, possibly delaying the start of the free agent period scheduled to start July 1.

The owners will have won several key concessions from the players, if the current proposal is agreed upon, according to sources on both sides.

• A 19-year-old age limit would be implemented. Players who are not 19 by draft night would be ineligible to declare. Under current rules, American players are eligible for the draft the year their high school class graduates. Foreign players must be 18 by draft night. The new proposed age limit would bar most, but not all (Amare Stoudemire was already 19 when he was drafted), high school players from entering the draft.

• Contract lengths would be reduced by one year. Currently, players can sign a fully guaranteed contract for a maximum of seven years if they re-sign with their current team. Players signing with a new team in free agency can sign a six-year deal. Under the new proposal, maxiumum contract lengths would shorten to five years for players signing with new teams and six years for players re-signing with their current team.

• Raises in contracts would be reduced. Under the current CBA, players are allowed maximum raises of 12.5 percent per year if they re-sign with their current team and 10 percent if they sign with a different team in free agency. Under the new proposal, raises would be reduced to 10 percent if a player re-signs with his current team and 8 percent if they sign with a different team in free agency.

• Teams would pick up an extra option year on rookie contracts. Currently, first-round picks are tied into a league salary scale. When a first-round pick signs a contract, the first three years are guaranteed, with a team option for the fourth year. Players are paid a set amount based on where they were selected in the draft. Under the new proposed rules, first-round picks would get the first two years of their contract guaranteed. The third and fourth years of the contract would be team options.

In return the owners would make the following concessions to the players if the current proposal is ratified:

• Total player salaries would be guaranteed. The proposed agreement guarantees that players receive a minimum of 57 percent of basketball-related income (BRI) in the form of salaries each year.

• The salary cap would increase. The current CBA bases the salary cap on BRI. The cap is set at 48 percent of BRI; last year, that came to $43.87 million. According to sources, the owners would agree to increase that percentage to 51 percent, in effect raising the salary cap. Sources say the cap would, in that case, rise to between $47 million and $50 million next season.

• Escrow would be reduced and distribution of escrow moneys modified. Currently, players must pay 10 percent of their salaries into an escrow account each season. If, at season's end, the total amount of player salaries exceeds 57 percent of the league's total basketball-related income, that money goes to the owners whose teams stay below the luxury-tax threshold (and a few that fall within a certain "cliff threshold"). If it doesn't exceed 57 percent, the players get their money back. Under the proposed agreement, that number would be slowly fazed down to 8 percent by the end of the agreement.

There is potentially another significant development in this area. Under current rules, the NBA has sole discretion over the use of the escrow money. Currently, it redistributes the cash (and luxury tax revenues) to teams that are under the luxury tax threshold. In essence, Clippers owner Donald Sterling gets a bonus for being cheap. Under the new proposed agreement, distribution rules would be changed so that luxury tax revenues would now be distributed equally among all 30 teams.

• No super luxury tax. Owners had been pushing for a "super tax" for teams who exceed the salary cap by more than a certain percentage. They would be penalized $2 for every dollar they were over the tax threshold. However, the owners dropped their demand for a super tax under the newest proposal.

Curry missed end of season due to irregular heartbeat

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Bulls say they have received "terrific news" about center Eddy Curry, who was sidelined during the season because of an irregular heartbeat. The statement from general manager John Paxson on Thursday did not give specifics or details, but said Dr. David Cannom's "positive report is terrific news for Eddy." Paxson did not return calls for comment from The Associated Press. The 22-year-old Curry missed the final 13 games of the regular season and the playoffs after experiencing an irregular heartbeat, and his status is a key issue for the Bulls this summer. "Our goal has not changed from day one and that is to ensure Eddy's long-term health as our number one priority," Paxson said in the statement. Cannom, director of cardiology at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles, concluded Curry's condition is not life-threatening after reviewing pictures of his heart and test results last week, the Chicago Tribune reported Thursday, citing anonymous sources. Curry's agent, Leon Rose, did not return calls to the AP. Curry is a restricted free agent, meaning the Bulls can match any offer he receives on the open market. In his fourth season, Curry led the team in scoring at 16.1 points per game and averaged 5.4 rebounds, helping the Bulls reach the playoffs for the first time since 1998. Non solo movimenti di giocatori e scelte in vista del draft: i Cleveland Cavaliers e i Minnesota Timberwolves, infatti, hanno aggiunto al proprio staff dirigenziale i nuovi general manager, Danny Ferry per i Cavs, Rex Chapman per i T'Wolves. Curioso che entrambe le franchigie, dopo aver licenziato il proprio coach durante la stagione regolare rimpiazzandolo ad interim, abbiano ulteriormente seguito lo stesso percorso scegliendo come nuovi allenatori rispettivamente Mike Brown e Dwane Casey, entrambi alla prima esperienza da head coach.

Danny Ferry, che guadagnerà circa 10 milioni in cinque anni, è il recordman di ogni epoca per partite giocate proprio con la maglia del team dell'Ohio, con 723 presenze. Anche per questo, oltre alla riconosciuta intelligenza e professionalità dell'ex ''director of basketball operations'' degli Spurs (si unì a R.C. Buford dopo le ultime due stagioni da giocatore in neroargento), i vertici della franchigia hanno scelto lui per sostituire Jim Paxson, licenziato al termine della stagione appena terminata, e per operare quindi le scelte più importanti al draft e soprattutto sul mercato dei free agents, in cui i Cavaliers, che avranno circa venticinque miliioni da spendere, dovranno affrontare la spinosa questione Ilgauskas e, cosa di non minor importanza, la volontà - anzi, la pretesa - di LeBron James di avere un team più competitivo.
Infatti, checché ne pensi King James (a cui non dispiacerebbe Michael Redd), un centro come il lituano non si trova dappertutto, e se restasse garantirebbe quella presenza sotto i canestri e quel talento che non molte squadre possono vantare. Tuttavia, sembra che rimanere a Cleveland non sia in cima ai desideri del trentenne di Kaunas che, peraltro, è vecchiotto per pretendere un contratto lungo e ricco. Come detto, starà a Ferry non tradire la fiducia datagli dalla franchigia stando attento a non far mancare nulla ad una squadra che, dopo due stagioni di vacanze anticipate, vorrebbe assaggiare il fascino dei playoffs.


Di minor impatto ed importanza, ma comunque importante, l'ingaggio, da parte di Minnesota, di Rex Chapman.
L'ex Kentucky, che ha nel suo curriculum dodici anni tra i Pro, ha lasciato la carica di ''director of basketball operations'' ai Phoenix Suns a causa di tensioni con il presidente Bryan Colangelo, e si è unito immediatamente al vice presidente della franchigia di Minneapolis, Kevin McHale, per diventare subito operativo in vista del draft di martedì. In effetti, a differenza di quello di Ferry a Cleveland (a meno che non arrivi Larry Brown), il ruolo di Chapman ai T'Wolves è difficilmente decifrabile, poiché finora McHale ha fatto tutto da solo, ed è difficile capire cosa realmente Chapman deciderà e quali saranno le situazioni di cui dovrà occuparsi. Staremo a vedere, ma l'impressione è che, nuovo GM o no, Kevin Garnett e compagni, al pari del pubblico del Target Center, non vedano l'ora di iniziare la nuova stagione per provare subito a rifarsi della fallimentare stagione passata. Ora è ufficiale.
New York e Phoenix si sono accordati per scambiarsi l'ala Kurt Thomas con la guardia Quentin Richardson.
Nell'operazione i Knicks ricevono anche il funambolico play tascabile Nate Robinson (scelto dai Suns con la 21) e una quantità non specificata di denaro.
In Arizona approda invece anche Dijon Thompson, scelto con la numero 54.
"Avere Quentin e Nate con noi significa fare un altro passo in avanti verso dove la franchigia vuole arrivare. E' uno scambio che ci rende più giovani e atletici e che migliora notevolmente la nostra difesa sul perimetro. Mi dispiace comunque aver rinunciato a Kurt" il commento di Isiah Thomas, gm dei Knicks.

In un altro importante scambio gli Utah Jazz sono riusciti a strappare ai Blazers la scelta numero 3, usata poi dai mormoni per arrivare al play di Illinois, Deron Williams.
In cambio sono arrivati in Oregon la scelta numero 6, usata di Blazers per arrivare alla guardia liceale Martell Webster, la numero 27 (usata per l'ala grande Kleiza) e una futura prima scelta.

Sempre Portland poi si è accordata con Denver per arrivare al play di Georgia Tech, Jarrett Jack, scelto con la numero 22 del draft.
A Denver finiscono Linas Kleiza, acquistato in precedenza da Utah e scelto con la 27, e Ricky Sanchez, selezionato con la 35esima chiamata.

In altri movimenti minori Denver ha acquisito i diritti sull'ala Martynas Andriuskevicius dai Cleveland Cavs, a cui finiscono una seconda scelta del 2006 e altre future agevolazioni.
Memphis ha poi acquistato i diritti sul centro Lawrence Roberts, girando a Seattle due future seconde scelte.
Orlando, infine, acquista da Phoenix i diritti su Marcin Gortat, in cambio di "future considerations".

I Seatlle Sonics hanno fatto le prime offerte di rinnovo del contratto ai 4 resticted free agent e cioè l'ala tiratrice serba e ottimo 6° uomo Vladimir Radmanovic, importantissimo nel sistema di gioco di Seattle l'anno scorso, l'ala titolare Reggie Evans, all'ottimo cambio Ronald "Flip" Murray e a Damien Wilkins, che contro i Kings e gli Spurs negli scorsi playoff ha mostrato buone attitudini difensive.
Lo stato di questi 4 giocatori permette alla franchigia della Citta della Pioggia di poter controbattere ad eventuali offerte che arriveranno e nel caso di pari offerte il giocatore rimarrà ai Sonics.
Sono in scadenza anche Ray Allen, top scorer dei Sonics, miglior giocatore e uomo simbolo della franchigia, e Antonio Daniels, giocatore molto appetito da mezza Nba. Giovedì scadrà il contratto di McMillan e, nel caso la società non gli facesse pervenie valide offerte, potrebbe partire in direzione New York per allenare al Madison Square Garden, scatenando una sommossa popolare nel Washington.

Damon Jones, play-guardia dei Miami Heat, ottimo tiratore sugli scarichi di O'Neal e Wade (ai quali deve almeno il 90% dei sui oltre 11 punti a sera), ha deciso di sfruttare l'opzione a suo favore e di uscire così dal contratto che lo lega agli Heat e che lo fà diventare restricted free-agent, contratto che gli avrebbe fruttato 2.75 milioni di USD nella prossima stagione. Jones, cercando di usare le cifre che ha accumulato la scorsa stagione, cercherà di ottenere un contratto più redditizio, ma la sua prima opzione è ovviamente quella di guadagnare quei soldi ancora a South Beach. Le trattative tra le due parti potranno iniziare da domani, e dal 22 Luglio, Jones potrà firmare ufficialmente il contratto.
Gli Heat hanno fatto la loro offerta anche all'ala Udonis Haslem, che è uscito da contratto in ricerca di uno più sostanzioso che si è indubbiamente meritato nell'ultima stagione; per prevenire una sua eventuale perdita, gli Heat al Draft hanno scelto l'ala appena uscita da Kansas Wayne Simien, potenziale (e non solo) Steal of the Draft. Più a nord, invece, nella Capitale, i Washington Wizards hanno fatto le prime offerte ai loro due restricted free-agent, e cioè la talentuosa, deludente ala Kwame Brown (per il momento peggior prima scelta assoluta di sempre) che fù sospeso nel pieno della serie contro i Chicago Bulls durante gli scorsi playoff, e alla guardia Steve Blake. L'opinione generale però è che l'offerta a Brown sia solo di facciata, cercando di ottenere un sign and trade con qualcuno.

Guard Raja Bell told ESPN.com's Marc Stein on Friday that he's planning to join the Suns later this month, as soon as NBA free agents are allowed to formally sign new contracts. "We're still negotiating the terms and everything, but that's where I intend to sign," Bell said Friday afternoon. Even though no contracts can be officially signed until July 22, teams were allowed to commence negotiations with free agents as of 12:01 a.m. Friday morning. Knowing that Bell is bound to attract considerable interest from teams looking for a quality defender who's also underrated as a shot-maker, Phoenix was apparently quick to offer Bell a multi-year deal. Bell, 28, averaged 11.6 points in two seasons with the Jazz to augment his reputation for sticky perimeter defense.
The Suns began the free-agent period with two top priorities -- re-signing restricted free agent Joe Johnson and signing All-Star forward Amare Stoudemire to a contract extension. Bell would be the second major addition to a team that won 62 games last season, following this week's trade of Quentin Richardson to New York for veteran forward Kurt Thomas. The Suns also struck quickly in free agency last July, reaching a verbal agreement to lure eventual league MVP Steve Nash from Dallas to the desert on the first day of negotiations. Nash and Bell are pals from their season together as Mavericks teammates. "Raja Bell intends to sign a contract with the Suns when the moratorium ends," his agent, Herb Rudoy, told ESPN Insider Chad Ford. "Raja really wanted to play with Steve Nash and saw a great opportunity to do just that."
Suns GM Bryan Colangelo declined comment on the story, citing league policy that prohibits NBA teams from commenting on free-agent negotiations during the moratorium.




It's deja vu all over again for Robert Horry. The forward, who was interested in joining the Heat last offseason, has again indicated Miami is a possibility, according to a report in the Palm Beach Post. "His first choice would probably be San Antonio," Horry's agent, Robert Barr, told the Post, "but Miami is close. He wanted to go to Miami last year." Horry, 34, declined the player option on his two-year, $2.3 million contract. According to the Post, the Heat would likely have only part of the mid-level exception -- last year that was $5.2 million, but this year it could be slightly more -- to offer Horry. "He'd love to play with the Big Fella [Shaquille O'Neal]," Barr said. "If Miami has interest, I'm sure he'd listen." Horry and O'Neal won three titles together when they played for the Lakers. Horry won his sixth title with the Spurs.
"He loves Miami and he loves the Big Fella," Barr told the Post. "We'll see what happens."

The Milwaukee Bucks didn't stop Friday at signing No. 1 overall draft pick Andrew Bogut. They also presented free-agent sharpshooter Michael Redd with a maximium contract offer in the afternoon, ESPN.com has learned. The Bucks, according to sources, have committed to paying the 25-year-old an estimated $80-90 million over the next six seasons. Exact figures won't be available until July 22, when the league is expected to announce next season's salary-cap number, but what is known now is that Milwaukee's offer will indeed be $20-plus million higher than anyone else's. That's because the Bucks, as Redd's current rights-holders, can offer a six-year deal. Outside suitors for Redd can only offer five years. That includes the Cleveland Cavaliers, who've made Redd their No. 1 target in free agency by offering a five-year max deal worth an estimated $60-70 million.
Redd would stun most league observers if he leaves that lucrative extra year on the table, but the fact he didn't immediately accept Milwaukee's offer gives Cleveland some hope. The Cavs are Redd's home-state team, and sources told ESPN.com the former Ohio State star was treated to a video plea to come to Cleveland from LeBron James early Friday morning. Free-agent negotiations throughout the league commenced at 12:01 a.m. Friday. To make their pitch as early as possible, Cleveland arranged to have a video delivered to Redd at that time featuring a recruiting pitch from James. Sources said Seattle's Ray Allen -- Cleveland's target if Redd stays with the Bucks -- received a similar video. Teams can only sign incoming rookies until the new labor agreement takes hold July 22, since rookie salaries (like Bogut's) are determined by scale. Redd can reach a oral agreement immediately with the Bucks or the Cavs or anyone else, but official free-agent signings are still three weeks away.

It's not yet known whether the Bucks' ongoing search for a coach will impact Redd's decision. Since firing Terry Porter during the NBA Finals, Milwaukee continues to chase ex-Minnesota coach Flip Saunders and came close to hiring TNT analyst Doug Collins. Saunders, believed to be waiting to see if he has a shot at Detroit's job, remains a Bucks candidate. Collins, though, is said to have asked out of the search after initially showing interest in the job. The Bucks are nonetheless optimistic about their future, having drafted Bogut and hoping that T.J. Ford can return from a year-long injury absence next season. Milwaukee is expected to try to bring back Allen if it loses Redd to the Cavaliers.

I Bucks, nonostante non abbiamo ancora trovato un head-coach (dopo ne parliamo) hanno avanzato la prima offerta a Micheal Redd. La franchigia del Wisconsin ha offerto a Redd il massimo contrattuale, cioè un contratto da 80/90 milioni in sei anni. Allenatori:
Si dice che Terry Porter, licenziato poco più di un mese fà dai Bucks, stia trattando con i Portland Trail-Blazers con i quali giocò 2 Finali tra la fine degli anni '80 e l'inizio dei '90. Gli stessi Blazers però hanno sentito anche Nate McMillan, che, dopo la scadenza il 30 Giugno scorso del suo contratto con i Sonics, sta trattando sia com Seattle che con Portland. A McMillan la squdra dell'Oregon, secondo il New York Times, ha offerto un annuale con opzione da 6 milioni.
I Bucks intanto sognano Flip Saunders, il quale ha riferito chiaramente a Harris, GM dei Bucks, di essersi già accordato con Dumars per andare a Detroit nel caso in cui Brown decida di ritirarsi. La decisione di Brown verrà comunicata direttamente a Dumars durante la cena che i due avranno Sabato: nel caso in cui Brown decide che il suo stato di salute è talmente grave ( e lo è) da non permettergli più di realizzare la sua missione, cioè quella di allenare, Dumars ufficializzerà l'accordo con Saunders e i Bucks dovranno cercarsi un altro allenatore; al contrario se Brown deciderà che può allenare ancora (ma è altamente improbabile), quasi sicuramente Saunders si accaserà nel Wisconsin.

I Denver Nuggets hanno avuto un colloquio con Bill Duffy, riguardo la situazione del suo assistito Marko Jaric.

Il play dei Clippers è restricted free agent, il che significa che i losangelini potranno pareggiare qualsiasi offerta pervenga al giocatore.

"Il loro interesse è molto elevato. Jeff Weltman, ora assistente gm ai Nuggets, è colui che scelse Marko per conto dei Clippers, ed è un suo grande fan" le parole di Duffy.

Intanto la società ha affermato che nei prossimi giorni verranno ufficializzati i contratti con i rookie Julius Hodge (2 anni a 2,4 milioni) e Linas Kleiza (2 anni a 1,8 milioni).

The Sonics have successfully negotiated with one of their two most critical offseason priorities. Their next move might be to try to nail down the other one.

Ray Allen, the All-Star guard whose game rose when the Sonics unexpectedly drove to the second round of the NBA playoffs, has agreed to a five-year contract for $80 million, with the possibility of $5 million more in performance bonuses.

"It never got so far off the track we couldn't get it done," said Allen's Washington, D.C.-based agent, Lon Babby.

The signing can't take place until July 22, per league rules, and until that moratorium ends, club officials can't confirm deals. Allen could not be reached for comment.

But Babby said Allen picked the Sonics after what the agent called a "robust" free-agent market for the Seattle standout.

The San Antonio Express-News reported on its Web site Wednesday that Robert Horry will remain with the San Antonio Spurs after agreeing to a three-year deal with the team. Houston television station KRIV also reported the agreement. Financial details were not disclosed. Horry has won six NBA titles, including the 2005 championship while making key shots down the stretch for the Spurs in a seven-game series against the Detroit Pistons. With his sixth title, the lanky forward joined the elite club occupied by Michael Jordan and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Free agents can't sign with a team until the terms of the league's collective bargaining agreement are settled later this month, but that appears to now be a formality for Horry and the Spurs. "As soon as he is allowed to sign the contract, he is going to sign it," Robert Barr, who represented the 13-year veteran in negotiations, told the Express-News on Tuesday. The paper reported there is a clause in the third year of the deal that would allow the Spurs to buy out the final year.
Horry's reputation for making clutch shots was on full display in Game 5 in Detroit. Horry scored the Spurs' final five points, calmly draining a 3-pointer with five seconds left in overtime to put San Antonio up 3-2 in the series.
Horry came off the bench to score 15 points in Game 7, including a key 3-pointer with 8:22 left in the fourth quarter to exetend the Spurs' lead to five. The Pistons never got closer than three points the rest of the way.
Horry spent 6½ seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers and helped them win three consecutive NBA championships. But they elected to let him go after he struggled in the 2002-2003 season. He signed with the Spurs. Barr said while Horry considered signing with the Dallas Mavericks, "Robert's love for the Spurs organization, head coach Greg Popovich and the city of San Antonio was too much for him to walk away from."
